SPECS Oil Mist Detection System (OMD) is a comprehensive system for detecting the presence of oil mist in vessel engine rooms and diesel engine crankcases and prevents accidents caused by dangerous levels of oil mist.
It has been reported that 52% of all engine room vessel fires are caused by the buildup of oil mist, which combined with the high temperatures frequently found in engine rooms, increases the possibility of an explosion and corresponding fire.

Due to the high frequency of oil-mist-caused fires, two leading maritime associations, the IACS (International Association of Classification Societies Ltd) and the OCIMF (Oil Companies International Marine Forum), require OMD systems to be installed in all vessels.

The SPECS OMD uses newest microprocessor and unique infra-red technology. It has been designed for detecting oil mist which might occur in the air of both crank chamber of diesel engines and engines room atmospheres such as engine oil pumps, heater & purifier room, steering gear, incinerator room, exhaust pipe line and other machinery equipment of the vessel.

Our Principals Messrs. Specs provide two (2) different versions of their Oil Mist Detection Systems:

1.Atmospheric – Engine Room Oil Mist Detection System – Vision IIIA, continuously scans and monitors the density of oil mist existing in the air that may originate from the engine rooms, oil purifiers, pumps, or any other machine rooms onboard a vessel. If the oil mist monitor detects an excessive level of oil mist vapor concentration in a limited area, it will give an early warning of the mist build-up before it reaches the risk level of an explosion or fire.

2. Diesel Engine Crankcase Oil Mist Detection System – Vision IIIC, in accordance with IACS UR M67 rules, is a Specs enhanced oil mist detection capability by incorporating advanced microprocessor and infrared technology to enable the detection of oil mist that is generated and suspended in diesel engine crankcases of marine vessels. The development of this detector provides a standalone solution for the small but sensitive operating environments in marine diesel engines.
